Aspidistra Elatior - Cast iron plant
Getting its common name from its robust nature, this plant is really very tolerant of neglect. Its large leaves make a stunning statement in any room and with minimal care requirements, it's a winner for plant people with busy lives and beginners alike.
Size: Nursery pot width 14cm, plant height 50cm,
Light: Possibly one of the only essential requirements of this plant is no direct sunlight as it can damage the leaves. A bright spot with diffused light is perfect but it will be fine in a spot on the darker side.
Water: Tolerant of irregular watering, this plant won't wilt on you should you forget to water it. Ideally let the top layer of soil dry before re watering but don't worry if you forget one week.
Temperature: Room temperature is adequate, try to avoid fluctuations in temperature but this pretty tough plant will cope.
Humidity: As its native to a forest setting, some level of humidity is required, an occasional mist with tepid water will stop the ends of the leaves browning.
Feed: Diluted fertiliser every few months during the warmer growing season will keep this plant happy.
Care tips: This plant has been kept in our homes for many years, popular in Victorian times as it easily tolerated the poor light and air quality so common then. A simple wipe of the leaves to keep them dust free will keep this plant happy.
This is also one of the few house plants with no toxic effects reported.
Height & Growth rate: Naturally a slow grower no matter the environment leaves can reach up to 2 ft.
Origin: China & Vietnam
